Today marks the birth of a historical heavyweight figure of American boxing, Jack Johnson, who was born in Galveston, Texas in 1878.

Jackson was a man without much education, son of slaves who became a boxing phenomenon with a peculiar feature for the time; he fought defensively and always maintaining all rivals at distance. He knew to take advantage of his height, and was patient to wait for his opponents to make a mistake.

His technique was very effective to win althought the specialist called him a coward. However, Johnson won about 50 fights up to 1902 a next he won the first world championship from Ed Martin in a 20-round bout for the first time ever two black men fought for the world title.

Johnson wanted the absolut title, and to reign over the heavyweights he had to fight James Jeffries who refused to fight him.

However, Johnson faced the former king Bob Fizsimmons and knoeked him out in two rounds.

His big night arrived on December 26, 1908 in Sydney, Australia, when he beat Tommy Burns the world champion of that time.  Police stopped the fight, and Johnson won by TKO after punishing his opponent at will, whom Johnston helped to get up each time when he was falling to the canvas after his punishing him.

Many thought that it was bad to have a black man as world champion, and called “the white hope” to every white boxer who would fight Johnston trying to win his belt.  However, no one could and Johnston reigned until 1915.

Jess Willard won the the belt when he knocked out Johnston after 26 rouds of battle in La Havana, Cuba, on April 5, 1915.

Johnson continued fighting until 1931 and left a record of 54-11-9, 35 KO’s.

He died on June 10 1946.

Hoy se conmemora el nacimiento de una histórica figura del boxeo estadounidense, Jack Johnson, quien nació en Galveston, Texas en 1878, y se convirtió en uno de los mejores peleadores de peso pesado de sus tiempos.

Sin mucha educación, hijo de esclavos, se convirtió en un fenómeno boxístico con una característica muy peculiar para la época, peleaba de manera defensiva y manteniendo siempre a distancia a todos sus rivales. Sabía aprovechar su altura, y era paciente para esperar que sus adversarios se equivocaran.

Era efectivo para ganar, pero criticado por los especialistas de esos tiempos que lo llamaban “cobarde”.

Sin embargo, Johnson se apuntó unas 50 peleas ganadas para el año 1902, y al siguiente conquistaba su primer título  al derrotar a Ed Martin en un combate de 20 asaltos. La batalla fue por el título mundial pesado de los boxeadores de color.

Johnson quería el título absoluto, el regular de los pesados que tenía James Jeffries quien siempre se negaba a pelear contra él.

Pero Johnson se midió al rey antecesor, Bob Fizsimmons a quien noqueó en dos asaltos.

Su gran noche fue el 26 de diciembre de 1908 en Sidney, Australia, cuando venció al entonces campeón mundial Tommy Burns. La pelea la detuvo la policía, y Johnson ganó por KOT después de castigar a placer a su rival, que cada vez cuando iba cayendo a la lona era levantado por Johnson quien seguía castigándolo.

Muchos pensaron que estaba mal tener a un “negro” como campeón mundial, por lo que llamaban a “Esperanza Blanca”, a cualquier peleador blanco que tratara de “recuperar el cinturón”. Sin embargo nadie pudo y Johnson reinó hasta 1915.

Jess Willard fue el encargado de conquistar el cinturón, después de noquear en el asalto 26 a Johnson en La Habana, Cuba, el 5 de abril de 1915.

Johnson se mantuvo peleando hasta 1931, y dejó 54 peleas ganadas, 35 por KO, 11 derrotas y 9 empates.

Murió el 10 de junio de 1946.
