Sonoran fighter Hernan “Tyson“ Marquez (23-1, 15 KOs) will arrive in Puerto Rico tomorrow with the firm objective of surprising WBA interim super flyweight champion Nonito Donaire (23-1, 15
KOs) on Saturday night at the Coliseo Jose Miguel Agrelot in Hato Rey, Puerto Rico. The bout will be the opener on Top Rank’s special “Pinoy Power/Latin Fury” event that will be televised on SHOWTIME.
“I understand the position I am,” Marquez commented. “I’m not the favorite so I’m under a lot of pressure since we signed the fight with Donaire, and in return this has given me great motivation and belief in myself and I wouldn’t be here if I didn’t think I would win.”
“Tyson” Marquez will have the opportunity to put his name alongside those of Carlos Palomino, Julio Cesar Chavez, Jose Luis Ramirez, Julio Cesar Borboa, Luis Ramon Campas, Jose Luis Castillo and Orlando Salido as world champions from the state of Sonora.
“Life offers few opportunities and I must take them when they occur,” Marquez stated. “When Zanfer offered us this world championship fight, we didn’t even need to think about it. We trust in our abilities.”
Marquez suffered his only defeat against another Filipino, Richie Mepranum, on March 12, but he says that incident is forgotten. “That defeat gave me a great lesson. I’ve prepared better for this fight, I’ll have no weight problems, we’ll demonstrate that we have what it takes to be crowned world champion.”
Marquez will arrive with trainer Rudy Perez, with whom he worked for five weeks at the Pino Suarez Gym in Mexico City.
