WBA Featherweight Champion, Jamaican Nicholas “The Axeman” Walters, finished between the top five contenders for the Sportsman of the Year Award held at the Pegasus Hotel in New Kingston on Friday night.
Tough neither was surprised at the victory of sprint royalty Usain Bolt, the 2012 edition of the award included top performers in a variety of sports other than the traditional athletics.
Bolt, who won gold medals at the 100m, 200m and 4x100m relay at the Olympic Games in London, also had success in the Diamond League circuit and was the obvious favorite to claim the award for the fourth time against his main rival through 2012, Yohan Blake and training partner Warren Weir, both silver and bronze Olympic medalists at the 200m.
Hansle Parchment, Jamaica´s best 110m hurdles specialist and recently crowned Walters completed the top five. Nicholas Walters was also voted Boxer of the Year.
The other nominees included sprinter Nickel Ashmeade and cricket stars Christopher Gayle and Marlon Samuels.
