The World Boxing Association (WBA) throughout its 100 years of existence has always advocated peace. For that reason, we are shocked by the outbreak of war, which the world has witnessed, after the Russian military attack on Ukraine.
The WBA, as it has done in other moments of history such as the Apartheid, feels the commitment to support the pursuit of peace with the actions that we can take from within our organization and in the field that corresponds to us. Our president, Gilberto Jesús Mendoza, has announced a Directorate meeting for next Monday to take a vote on the suspension of any world, international or regional title fight in Russian territory until the end of the conflict.
Our actions are not against the Russian people or their boxers, officials, trainers, or promoters. We have always enjoyed a cordial relationship with them, but we understand that today the conditions are not right for these types of events and the WBA is committed to take actions that encourage a peace agreement.
We also want to send a solidarity message to the Ukrainian people, to the Klitschko brothers, legends of our sport, and to our Ukrainian world and regional champions, trainers, and promoters.
The WBA thus joins the actions of other boxing sanctioning bodies, and we join in prayer for the prompt achievement of peace.
