Saturday night at the Manchester Arena in Manchester, Lancashire, United Kingdom, #11 ranked Khalid Yafai (21-0, 14 KOs), from Birmingham, West Midlands, UK, won the vacant WBA World super flyweight title via unanimous 12-round decision over former WBA super flyweight champion Luis Concepcion (35-5, 24 KOs), from Panama City, Panama.
The fight against Yafai was supposed to be Concepcion’s first defense of the title he won in August by beating Kohei Kono in Tokyo. But “El Nica” came in 2.7 pounds over the 115-pound limit at yesterday’s weigh-in, thereby relinquishing his belt on the scale.
Yafai had only fought five scheduled 12-round fights coming in, but the slick 2012 Olympian looked comfortable going the distance. “Kal” outboxed Concepcion with ease and dropped the former champion with a left in round 10.
The final scores were 117-100 and 120-108 twice.
Congratulations to the new WBA World super flyweight champion.
