Former Argentinean world champion Mónica “La Gata” Acosta, 37, has surprisingly decided to retire from boxing and announced she will continue as a trainer with her husband Roberto “Pocho” Arrieta, at her neighborhood’s gym in Santa María de La Pampa in Argentina.

Acosta, was super lightweight world champion of the World Boxing Council (WBC) and the World Boxing Association (WBA).

Acosta made her debut in professional boxing on September 15, 2007 in Rivadavia Club in Arata, La Pampa, defeating Etel Cristina Arano by UD. She won the World Boxing Association FEDEFEM title on December 7, 2008, defeating Brazilian Silvia Lescano by knock out in round one.

She won the The World Boxing Council (WBC) super lightweight title on June 19, 2009 beating Colombian Darys Pardo, by decision in 10 Rounds in General Villegas, Buenos Aires, Argentina. On February 18, 2011, she conquered the WBA world title by defeating the legendary Alejandra Oliveras in La Pampa, Argentina.

On January 18, 2014 she lost her WBA super lightweight title by UD in 10 rounds against Ana Laura Esteche, in San Clemente, Buenos Aires. And she lost her WBC title in 2013 out of the ring.

In her last fight, on September 12 last year in General Alvear, Mendoza, Acosta lost against Marisa Gabriela Nuñez by majority decision in 10 rounds fighting for the International Boxing Federation (IBF) vacant title.

Since 2007 until her retirement, she won 19 fights (5 KO’s), two defeats and two draws with 12 world title fights. She is one of the most striking boxers in the history of women’s boxing.
