The World Boxing Association (WBA) published its new female ranking lists for the month of April and also announced the monthly awards that went to Erika Cruz as Fighter of the Month and Hanna Gabriels as Honorable Mention.
Erika Cruz surprised the world by defeating Canadian Jelena Mrdjenovich by technical decision last Thursday, April 22nd, in New York. The Mexican was superior throughout the fight, which lasted until the seventh round due to accidental cuts by headbutts, and won on the judges’ cards to dethrone Mrdjenovich.
Meanwhile, Gabriels reappeared in her native Costa Rica and managed to win the WBA Light Heavyweight title by defeating Mexican Martha Lara Gaytán by TKO in just two rounds on April 17th. The Central American had recovered from a delicate arm injury that kept her away from the ring for about two years and came back to prove that she is still one of the best pound-for-pound female fighters today.
It was a great month for women’s boxing because of the good action in the fights. The female rankings are available on the WBA website with all the month’s movements.
